A Short History of the Stride Rite Corporation
Founded in Boston, Massachusetts in 1919, the Stride Rite Corporation was formerly known as the Green Shoe Manufacturing Company by Jacob A. Slosberg and his partner, Philip Green. The small company was set up in a small section of horse stables converted into shoe manufacturing facilities of the time, and specialized in making welt shoes for kids. This incarnation of the company employed about 100 skilled workers who produced anywhere between 800 to 1,000 pairs of shoes a day. The Stride Rite Corporation had built up a full fledged shoe manufacturing facility before World War II had started, making the overcrowded stables the company had previously produced shoes a thing of the past. The Great Depression did not stunt the growth of the company, as the company even hired a man named Tom Lalonde, a childrens’ shoe manufacturer and specialist who also happened to owned the name Stride Rite. This name was eventually bought from him too, and was initially made the name for their second line of childrens’ shoes.
In the wake of World War II, the Stride Rite Corporation helped to manufacture the field boot used by nurses in the war, as well as the WAC boot used by the U.S. Army. This military tenure was also utilized by Slosberg to help promote the shoe to patriotic Americans, and also helped to seal distribution deals with department stores and other retailers across the entire country. The company grew even faster during the post war baby boom, effectively quadrupling the work force and increasing factory floor space. Jacob Slosberg died in 1953, leaving the Stride Rite empire to his children. In 1960, Stride Rite became a public company, and made more acquisitions of smaller shoe making companies in order to increase production in different parts of the States. The company also appeared on the New York Stock Exchange for the first time in 1960. Stride Rite also made day care services and community groups available to the general public through their corporate offices and factories both in and out of the United States. However, the plans for these day care services were stunted because of state regulations for child care, but did not hinder the child care services offered in overseas offices and factories.
